TREE GUARD® is a pre-mixed, ready-to-use deer repellent that sprays on milky and dries clear. The active ingredient, Bitrex™, makes the coated plant taste bad. A detection agent lets deer know the plant has been treated. TREE GUARD® leaves a clear sheen, which resists washing off from rain and snow. TREE GUARD® may be used on any non-food plant, and poses minimal risk to deer, plants, people and the environment.

 | (55 days) Minnetonka, Minnesota, a suburb of the Minneapolis area, has a well documented problem with deer browsing of residential trees, flowers, and bushes. Before TREE GUARD® the only effective deterrent was a ten foot high fence... not an appropriate measure for a residential area. The site tested has an established free ranging deer herd. Deer browse on the site is high, and ornamentals such as hosta, tulips, white cedar, and azaleas are often completely consumed by deer unless protected by a deer repellent.
Plants treated with TREE GUARD® and untreated plants were left at the site. Of course, scientific measurements were taken to determine the exact effectiveness of the product... but we think the photos tell the story the best!
TREE GUARD® remained effective throughout the 55 day test period... through inches of rain, summer sun, and intense browsing by hungry deer. |
(121 days) St. Croix, Minnesota is an area with a history of deer damage because a large established herd of free ranging deer commonly travels through the property on a trail which runs along the west bank of the St. Croix River.
Northern white cedar are highly preferred as food by white tail deer. The residential property tested had over 50 established white cedar trees, and 34 were selected for this study.
The results were dramatic. Untreated trees were heavily browsed. (The trail was ended when the property owner insisted on treating the control trees with TREE GUARD®.) His untreated trees had been stripped of foliage to four feet. The treated cedars were virtually unbrowsed.
"Although deer are in my yard day and night,
I am the only person in the village who has any (white cedar) trees that have not been eaten by deer... Needless to say, I am very happy with the way your TREE GUARD® has worked." |

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources directed Jay McAnich, a nationally recognized expert on white tail deer, to study the effectiveness of leading deer repellents. His tests demonstrate clearly that TREE GUARD® was most effective in those areas of heaviest deer populations.

How does TREE GUARD® differ from other products? TREE GUARD® contains Bitrex™, the most bitter substance known to man, and a detection agent deer learn to avoid. TREE GUARD® bonds to plant surfaces with a latex formulation.
Will TREE GUARD® wash off during the next rain? No. That's what makes TREE GUARD® different. Latex resists water, so it keeps working for an entire season. Only new growth needs to be protected. Once leaves drop in the fall, one application should protect until spring.
Is TREE GUARD® safe to use? Absolutely. Bitrex was developed for the dentistry market in the 1950's as an alternative to Novacaine but failed because of it's incredibly bitter taste. TREE GUARD® contains no ingredients that carry diseases and is guaranteed free of slaughterhouse wastes or animal urine.
Can I use TREE GUARD® on my vegetables? No, the taste of your vegetables will be affected.
Will TREE GUARD® leave a white coating on my plants? No. TREE GUARD® dries clear and shiny. If anything, it improves the appearance of your plants.
Read and follow directions Where deer pressure is high, consider other abatement options, including fencing.
